It’s Time To Step Up: Don’t Waste Any Opportunity
All of us have dreams but not a lot of us have plans and the courage to get there.
Some people want to grow and be successful in the field they’ve chosen but are not willing to take risks or grab any opportunity to make it happen.
Are they not ready? Or they are simply afraid of the responsibilities that come with it.
Or maybe, they are just contented of what they know and what they can do at the moment together with their responsibilities and not quite ready to STEP UP?
I know, I was like that before (or maybe I’m still am). But one thing I’ve learned in the information technology (IT) industry is that if you stop learning, YOU WILL BE LEFT BEHIND. Technology will not wait for you to catch up.
If it helps, here are some of my thoughts and things I’ve experienced before that made me realize I need to change myself, make a move and grow :
1. I’m doing the same shit everyday
Yes, I know whatever you are doing right now is important. But let me ask you, aren’t you bored? Don’t you want to step up a notch and try new things? Don’t you want to learn more? Aren’t you threatened that while others are getting better, you are right here complacent at your current state, doing what you always do? What if new people come along and they can do better or offer more than what’s on the table? Aren’t you scared that there will come a time when you are no longer needed by the company? By your team? By your peers? To be honest, it is merely up to you to take the odds and grow. You and I will have to make a choice and decide.
2. Work feels like a piece of cake
Since you’re doing the same thing over and over again, you stopped pushing yourself. You start to give in to your impatience. Your work now becomes way too familiar. And at some point, it starts to feel like things don’t need much effort to think hard or such things are not worthy to be tired of at the end of the day. “But that is exactly the point, everyone wants to find a work that is not stressful, blah blah blah”. Yes, I know, BUT IF YOU WANT TO GROW, that’s absolutely not the right place to be my friend.
3. “You’re not driven” is an understatement.
Nothing in your work is giving you interest. You’re not motivated anymore. The only thing that excites you now is when you’re minutes away from your shift being over and you’re off to somewhere with your pals or simply getting cozy at home. You hate changes, even the smallest ones because you are stuck on a compact four corners you’ve created for yourself that even the tiniest beam of sunlight makes your eyes burn. It’s sad but you can’t deny that it’s true.
I’ve been there and sometimes I still feel the same way.
So, if you’re reading this and you think you’re the person I’m talking about, please don’t be afraid. If your boss asks you if you can do something, don’t hesitate, just say yes. Say, you’ll try your best. Say, you’re up for the challenge.
If you are in a team, don’t be ashamed to ask for help. The important thing is whether you did it on your own or with the help of others, you learned. The next time you do it or do something related to it you’ll realize, “hey, this doesn’t break a sweat.” 😉
NO ONE in this world started their work already great (except those god-like beings gifted with greatness). Don’t settle for mediocrity and allow yourself to be a beginner. Do dumb shit and learn from it, but of course, remember to not do it again. 😅
I don’t know about you, but this is what I think. I could be wrong. Maybe, I’m here to talk to myself or to the people around me. But if you ever come across this article, know that life begins when you GRAB THE OPPORTUNITY and TAKE THE RISK. So just grab it, just fucking grab it!
